Understorey Magazine (est. 2013) publishes empowering literary works written by women writers who reside in Nova Scotia (Canada) or have connections to the province.
The staff is accepting poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction (with a feminist perspective) for Issue # 12 on the theme of “African Nova Scotian Women.” Canadian writers, between the ages of 12 and 21 who identify as women of African descent, may submit prose and poetry for this issue.
Because Understorey’s mission is to publish diverse opinions, styles, and viewpoints, especially the voices of underrepresented writers, the editors favor personal stories, whether as poetry or prose. They welcome conventional short stories, essays and verse, including letters, rants, narratives, discourse, or any form of storytelling.
Word length: under 1500 words for prose; submit up to five poems per submission.
*Payment: $30-$60 per submission.
Deadline: September 1, 2017. Read submission guidelines at Understorey’s website.
Katherine J. Barrett is founder and editor-in-chief.
