Science Fiction Stories Needed for Special Issue of ‘Black Girl Magic Lit Mag’ – Pays $50/story

Black Girl Magic Lit Mag is a new online literary magazine with the purpose of supporting and promoting diverse voices and characters in speculative fiction, particularly Black women’s voices. The first issue debuted Jan. 2016. Publication is quarterly.

The editors have opened a short reading period to curate stories for a special science fiction-themed January 2017 issue. Stories must be about and by Black Women, or provided that the protagonist is a Black Female. Other sub-genres can include magical realism, fantasy, surrealism, and horror.

The editors encourage submissions from writers who define themselves as people of color, women, members of the QUILTBAG community, and others who are marginalized or underrepresented in the speculative fiction genre.

Word length: 1K-6K per story or 250-500 words for flash fiction.

Payment: a flat rate of $50 per fiction story; $25 per non-fiction articles.

CaShawn Thompson is publisher and editor.

Submissions close December 15, 2016. Writers who do not have a sci-fi story can wait until the next reading period to submit.
