Modern literary magazine One Story (est. 2002) has opened its annual reading period and is now accepting submissions of high-quality literary fiction from freelance contributors.
Because the publication receives approx. 100 submissions weekly and the editors choose only one story per monthly issue, competition among writers is very high.
The staff is open to all fiction writing styles and topics. Stories must be original and unpublished.
Recommended word length is 3K to 8K words.
Payment: One Story pays $500/story, paid upon publication. (Last year’s rates were $250/story.) One Story buys FNASR. The author retains all rights following publication.
Deadline: May 31, 2017. Read writer’s guidelines at One Story’s website.
Published for over 14 years, each issue of One Story contains one feature-length story by one promising or established author. The publication has garnered many respectable literary awards over the years, including the PEN/Nora Magid award for editorial excellence. It is one of the largest circulating literary publications in the U.S.
