On Second Thought (est. 2016), a quarterly literary magazine published by the North Dakota Humanities Council, is accepting submissions of prose and poetry for a special themed issue. Called Sense of Place, this issue will collect the best stories, essays, and poems highlighting amazing literature from or about North Dakota.
To qualify, writers need to show a connection to North Dakota personally or in their writing–they do not have to be residents or natives of North Dakota. Additionally, submissions do not have to be about the midwestern state.
Word length: 1K-3K words per fiction story; 1K-4K words per nonfiction piece; up to 60 lines per poem.
Payment: $250 per selected piece. The editors will publish material online and in the print edition.
Deadline: September 1, 2017.
NDHC is also seeking submissions of scholarly essays on any humanities topic. Articles must be thoroughly research, justified, and defended. Essays must be written for the general public. The NDHC will pay $350 for selected essays.
