Penny Publications is inviting both emerging and seasoned fiction writers to write for the award-winning Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine (est. 1941), a bi-monthly publication of modern crime and mystery short stories.
The magazine publishes every variety of mystery short story: the psychological suspense tale, the deductive puzzle, the private eye case, and crime and discovery (from the realistic to the more inventive). Both hard-boiled detective stories and cozy mysteries are welcome. Because the mystery genre is wide-ranging, the editors will consider almost any story that features crime or hints of crime.
Word length: 2500-8K words per story. Shorter stories are also considered
Payment: 5-8 cents/word (typically higher for more seasoned writers).
Writers should read an issue of EQMM to familiarize themselves with the unique editorial style and tone. When reviewing submissions, the editors look for strong writing, an original and thrilling plot, and skillful artistry in storytelling.
Reading period is typically open year-round.
